End of exams, end of phase and happy birthday to me
Friday, January 25th, 2008 at 20:01 | by Alistair BaillieHello all! That’s the first set of exams this phase done and out of the way, the second set is at some point in May.
I’ll let you know the results once I get them back in a week or two.
Tuesday the 22nd was also my birthday and I am now 23! As has been tradition for the past 6 years I had a wonderful birthday present of an exam! Fortunately it was the last exam and I went out with a group of people to Frankie and Benny’s for dinner then back to flat where several got a bit tipsy
Today was Warsash Maritime Academy’s open day and I was helping out for most of the day – I’ll do anything to avoid paying for parking outside my flat in Southampton!
For those not aware, the “phase 3†on the foundation degree route is essentially two separate phases. The first part covers the remainder of cargo, stability and meteorology. The second half which starts on Monday has us timetabled for such wonderful classes as “Command Management†and “Marine Operationsâ€, the content of which is anyone’s guess, but I’ll let you know that next time.
I’ll jump to answering a question from Thomas;
What are the staff facilities like on board of the ship you are stationed and when you go back do you get placed on the same ship or do you have a go on the island escape?
I am not entirely sure what you mean by staff facilities but onboard there was;
- Crew/Staff/Officers bar located on deck 2 which was open from 2200 – 0200;
- Crew deck located on deck 7 at the aft which had a plunge pool;
- Crew, Staff & Officers had their own messes down on deck 3;
- There was a crew gym / library on deck 3 which had computers with internet access and wireless.
As Staff/Officers you are granted “deck privileges†depending upon your position including permission to use passenger gym (after hours), the passenger restaurants and bars, shops, theatre and night club.
As for the second part of your question, the simple answer is I don’t know. I can be assigned to any of the two Island Cruises ships and I will go wherever my training manager chooses to send me. Personally since I am only ever going to be on their ships I think it’s a good idea to go on both so I can get experience with the different vessels and the different systems onboard.
