As you have probably already guessed my name is Alistair Baillie and I am currently training to be a deck officer in the British Merchant Navy with Viking Recruitment onboard Island Cruises ships.
I was born in Scotland on tuesday the 22nd of January 1985, which at the time of writing makes me 22 years old. I attended the old Cambusnethan Primary School and then moved onto Coltness High School in 1996. In 2002 I left Coltness and started studying BSc Software Engineering at the University of Strathclyde which is in Glasgow. Deciding at the end of my second year that it wasn't for me, I changed course and graduated on the 31st of October 2005 with a BSc in Science Studies (Computer Science).
Not wanting to spend my life sitting behind a desk in front of a computer I discovered the Merchant Navy's Officer Cadet training program and was accepted by Viking Recruitment to train as an officer cadet onboard Island Cruises ships.
So there you have it, that's a brief summary of my life so far.
Well I love traveling the world and getting to meet new people or I wouldn't be doing this! I like going away and coming home again - how many people can say they go on holiday to Wishaw! Disney films! Harry Potter! Brazil! Palma de Majorca! Most types of music as long as it has words - except RAP! Heroes (I got to see it 6 months before everyone else!), The IT Crowd, The Apprentice, Family Guy, Southpark, American Dad, Web Design (as a hobby), Christmas, Bad weather at sea!!! and lots of other random things.
Flying long distance - its soo boring and far nicer to travel it by ship! People who drive at ridiculously slow speeds (I'm talking 40 mph) in the outside lane of the m8 motorway!
I'm not really that old but since I have had this section on the site for years here's two that I can think of;
Yes, sad I know, but I can still remember back to my first shift, the first time I went out with people from work, and my first works Christmas night out, and I am happy to say I have enjoyed it all. It may not have all been good, but I have no real complaints about working there, the people (most of) we're brilliant, I hope I got on with everyone, and I kind of enjoyed the work I did.
I enjoyed working with the people at Homebase who became my friends, at all the stores I worked in, and hope they continue to keep in touch with me and let me know how they are getting on every few months!
My University experience was brilliant, I think I missed out on some of it because my course had over 200 people on it in my first year - which quickly dropped to around 150 by third year, not to mention the classes were massive and mixed with other courses, but I enjoyed every minute of it - even the 6am rises to get on a bus at 7.30am in the dark and freezing cold winters when it was snowing heavily! I am glad I went to University, it as well as Homebase boosted my confidence as well as giving me several friends who I remain in touch with.
